So, you’re (hopefully) planning to move to Stockport, but you’re not sure where. Not to worry. In this blog, we’ll be covering some of the best places to move to in Stockport, so you can make an informed choice on where’s best to hang your hat (no pun intended.)
Once known for it’s impressive hat making heritage and it’s equally impressive Victorian viaduct, Stockport has been making an incredible resurgence and is becoming a desirable urban hotspot for those moving outwards from Manchester City Centre or inwards from elsewhere, even becoming one of the best places to live in the North West of England.
But what makes Stockport, well… Stockport? From a true Mancunian’s perspective, it’s all about the community spirit and the hometown spirit that Stockport-ians hold close, as well as the ever developing transport links to Manchester, as well as its blossoming culture and food scenes.
Destination #1 - The Historic Underbanks
The Underbanks. What a place. If you’re looking to add a dash of vibrancy to your life, look no further than the Underbanks. With its expansive range of impressive stores, you’ll be stuck for choice on where to pop your head in on a shopping spree. The Underbanks has so much to offer, including some pretty decent eateries as well as a bunch of places to get your hands on some sweet sweet clobber.
Thanks to the Rediscovering the Underbanks initiative (backed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local investment), this area has been revitalised into a lively quarter packed with independent boutiques, cafés, wine bars and creative spaces.
The Underbanks consists of the Great Underbank, the Little Underbank and Rostron Brow. If you take a stroll through the Underbanks, you’ll notice the cobbled streets and beautiful Victorian architecture. The Underbanks have been a vital trading route for centuries and is still Stockport’s finest shopping street.
Why the Underbanks is the place to be...
-
Walkable, vibrant neighbourhood with unique local businesses and regular events.
-
It offers fast access to Stockport Market Hall, eateries, bars and cultural venues.
-
It offers an authentic up and coming urban lifestyle. Very similar in feel to Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
Destination #2 - The Heatons
Just north of the town centre is the Heatons. This term encompasses Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel, Heaton Norris and Heaton Mersey, and are highly regarded as some of Stockport’s most desirable places to live.
Why, you ask? Simple. The Heatons are vibrantly green and are jam packed with beautiful historic architecture from both the Victorian and Edwardian periods, making it a sought after and picturesque area to live within. And with regular, 10 minute trains into Manchester City Centre, it also offers up a level of convenience that surrounding areas can’t match.
It was also voted one of the best places to live in Manchester in 2025.
Destination #3 - Edgeley & Cale Green
Just east of the town centre, Edgeley and neighbouring Cale Green attract buyers and renters who want value, but also want the convenience of living close to the bustling town centre of Stockport. It’s incredibly close to Stockport station, making access to Manchester City Centre a doddle.
The affordable housing stock is value for money in comparison to more established suburban areas, and interest from young professionals and first time buyers is on the rise due to its close proximity to the Underbanks and the town center.
Destination #4 - Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme
Not to be confused, as the two areas are separate entities!
Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme are both among Stockport’s most sought-after suburban areas, heralded for their leafy streets, spacious family homes, and a strong sense of community.
Cheadle offers a bustling village centre with boutique shops, restaurants, cafes, and excellent transport links, making it more than ideal for professionals and families who want suburban comfort with easy access to Manchester. Cheadle is also a council focus in 2025, with constant investment from local councils planned to help the village centre experience a higher level of footfall.
Just south, Cheadle Hulme exudes a slightly quieter, more residential vibe, known for its highly rated schools, abundant green spaces, and peaceful neighbourhoods. Together, they strike a perfect balance between convenience and tranquillity, offering residents the best of suburban living while remaining connected to Stockport town centre and the wider Greater Manchester area.
Destination #5 - Hazel Grove
Hazel Grove is a popular and well rounded area of Stockport that appeals to a wide mix of residents, from young professionals to growing families. It has a strong local centre with shops, cafés, supermarkets and everyday amenities all within easy reach, creating a convenient, tight knit community feel.
Excellent transport links are a major plus in Hazel Grove, with a train station offering direct services into Manchester and easy access to the A6.
Hazel Grove also benefits from nearby green spaces and countryside walks, giving it a pleasant balance between suburban living and outdoor life, making it a reliable and attractive choice for those looking to settle in Stockport.

Soldier on the move were absolutely amazing when they moved mum from a three bedroom house to a one bedroom flat. Especially as we were nowhere near ready for them. Sue and Nicola at the office, were, from the very beginning to the day we moved, utterly fabulous. They couldn't do enough for us, at a time that many find stressful and confusing. Their advice and support was unwavering; showing understanding, and calming what could have been a difficult time. The movers, Kenny, Jordan and Tim, on the day, were professional thoughtful, cheerful and really helpful. They were efficient and took time to listen, and didn't rush us in any way. I can't praise them enough and would highly recommend them for your move.
