So… You’re planning your big move to Stocky P. You’re excited, and rightfully so, as there’s a lot to look forward to! You might have your reasons for moving to Stockport, whether you’ve moved there for its convenient access to Manchester City Centre, or perhaps you’ve heard that it’s on the list of great places to live – but that doesn’t change the fact you still need to get your move into first gear.
Hopefully, this blog’ll help you get off the starting line for the big move you’ve got planned.
Here’s how to plan your move to Stockport, from initial quote stages all the way through to unpacking your possessions in your new home. Let’s dive into the blog.
Start With a Removal Quote
If you’ve already got your quote done and dusted, you can ignore this step. But we’ve put this one at the top for good reason. There’s nothing worse than leaving your removals quote to the last minute and having to settle for a sub-par service because all of the sought after removal firms are too booked up to take your move on.
When getting your quote, you want to make sure that the person or the team that shows up to quote you are serious about what they do. And please. Make sure you ask all the important questions early to avoid any last minute nightmares.
Questions You Could Ask are...
Do You Have Adequate Insurance Coverage For My Goods In Transit?
A great question to ask if you’ve spent a fair bit on TVs, furniture & more as you’ll need to know that the company transporting your goods can make right if there’s any accidental damage.)
When Will You Be Here to Prepare My Personal Effects for Transportation?
(If you’ve asked the removal company to pack for you.) Ask your removals company how they’re going to make sure your TVs, pictures, mirrors and other fragile goods are adequately protected?
Will Access To My Property Be A Problem?
If you live in a property with limited access (no driveway, tight roads or a seventh floor flat with no lift), you might want to ask your removals company what their plans are and how they intend on executing your move. This’ll save you the hassle of your movers turning up and turning down the job because they aren’t able to access the property. These questions are drummed up by us as questions we’d ask if we were moving property as we’d want to know what precautions are being taken ahead of time. Moving quotes shouldn’t just be weighed up on cost alone.
Make sure you use the time spent with whoever’s quoting your move to get under the skin of who you’re actually dealing with, as the last thing you’d want is someone turning up with a dirty van and chucking your valuables into the back of their van with no real care.
This leads to breakages and an overall poor service, which is why we always recommend moving with a removals business that takes customer satisfaction seriously.
Make Sure You Pack Properly.
The second most crucial part of your move is the packing phase. Any removals company worth their weight in gold will usually offer a full packing service at an additional cost. Packing yourself can obviously be a means to save a little bit of money if cash is tight, but you’ll want to make sure it’s done properly or else you’ll end up costing yourself time & money in the long run.
We’ve covered packing extensively a number of times throughout our website, particularly on our blog and packing supplies section, including the packing of fragile goods.
Basically, in short, pack everything securely. Cut down the movement goods have to travel inside of sealed boxes with bunched up packing paper or bubblewrap and take the adequate steps to secure things that are liable to break. Use the right boxes. Don’t rely on the sturdiness of the crisp box you’ve had above your cupboards for the last two years.
Top tip: Ask your removals company for cardboard boxes. Most of them are happy to supply sturdy cartons as it makes their jobs easier when it comes to shifting them all.
Do Your Research.
Stockport’s a pretty big place, so you’re better off doing your research to decide where you’re going to be moving to way ahead of time. Each area has its own little quirks as well as local amenities that make them desirable places to live, whether it’s for the accessible train routes between Stockport and Manchester, or the vibrant tight-knit community spirit that Stockport has to offer.
If you’re trying to figure out where the best place to live in Stockport is, we’ve done a blog on that too (surprise surprise.) Go give it a quick read and hopefully it’ll help you decide on where suits you best.
Measure Doorways and Large Items.
Before your move commences, you’re going to want to know what needs disassembling and what doesn’t. Measuring doorways and large pieces of furniture should hopefully shed some light on what needs taking apart, and again, if your removals company is all about helping you move stress-free, they should be able to provide a disassembly/assembly service (albeit at an additional cost.)
Things like wardrobes, dressers, couches (the legs are typically the culprit!) or other pieces of furniture that are moderately sized could slow down your move if you haven’t planned ahead, so make sure you get your measuring tape out and a piece of paper to note down the dimensions of your new home’s door frames so you know exactly what’s going to fit and what isn’t. The more intel you can give to your moving team, the better!
Check the Weather Forecast.
If you’re moving from down south and you’re not used to the signature dreary drizzles that the North of England sometimes has to offer, you’re better off checking the weather forecasts before you commence your move. Most removal companies will be able to cater for bad weather with furniture coverings, so don’t stress too much!
Pick a Removals Firm You Can Trust.

Check Google Reviews for Genuine Feedback.
It’s 2026 and practically everything is online. If you’re concerned that the removals firm you’ve picked isn’t quite up to the task, you can check their Google or Trustpilot reviews for the cold hard truth. Try not to take a disgruntled customer’s feedback as gospel if the majority of reviews are positively influenced.
We’ve got over 300+ 5* reviews across Google & Trustpilot and take customer satisfaction very seriously. Check out some of our satisfied customer reviews below!

The guys were all very friendly, very thorough and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them. We had an issue fitting in the garden furniture into the large van provided so they managed to get hold of a second van within the hour at no extra cost. The whole move went really smoothly. A special thanks to Jordan and Karl from SOTM and the other 2 guys who were hired in to help. Thanks again.Posted on Google Sarah StroudTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used Soldiers on the Move last week at the end of May. They were amazing, so organised, on time, fabulous teamwork when moving and packing up all our stuff. Very polite and professional, and helpful. Moving is stressful as we all know, I cannot recommend these guys enough. If you want a stress free move day, go with Soldiers on the Move they were excellent!!!Posted on Google Jo TillotsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t recommend Soldiers on the Move highly enough. Despite needing to move at short notice, Nicola helped arrange my move on my preferred date, and was unflappable when she came round to finalise the quote and I was in the middle of packing and everything was chaos. The quote was super affordable, even with a full kitchen pack. I couldn’t believe that wardrobe boxes and all the kitchen packing materials were included in the price. On the day, Danny, Kenny, Jordan and Riley were simply brilliant. In a little over two hours they had packed up the kitchen and loaded the entire contents of my 3 bed house plus garage onto two vans. They took extra care of paintings and artwork, and all the electronics essential for my business. Unloading at the new house was just as efficient! All in, the lads were with me for less than 5 hours. They were super professional and incredibly good at their jobs, but in their professionalism they also balanced being friendly and interested in my move, and very kind. I’ve had not so great moving experiences in the past and this was a whole new world. From start to finish, they made me feel very comfortable as a woman on my own, and I am so grateful that I found them. My mum had heard about SOTM on the news, and they deserve every accolade! I’ve already recommended them to a friend who will be moving in a couple of months, and I would recommend them to everyone looking! Thanks SOTM for making my move pretty much stress-free!Posted on Google Joe McDonaldTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Top experience, Danny & his team eased all concerns from start to finish. We didn’t have to lift a finger. Couldn’t recommend the company morePosted on Google Gareth ProsserTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cannot speak highly enough of this company. Every stage and ever person i spoke to or dealt with were brilliant. Quotation stage was very easy. I had an estimated move date which moved on a couple of occasions. I looked to pay a deposit but they suggested waiting for exchange to ensure i did not lose any money. In the end my exchange was on the same day as completion and they only ended up needing deposit the day before. Despite this they dropped off as many packing boxes as we needed approx 5 weeks before. The lads arrived on time, all introduced themselves. Friendly and proffesional from the start. They started with a full walk around, final checks and discussions and proceeded to fill 3 vans over the course of the morning. As exchange and complerion was not done yet they then went back to base pending an update. Despite the lack of progress of legal activity they never pushed, acted impatient. Calm and relaxed at all times which really helped to take the stress out of the situation for us. We got the go ahead around 1pm and got to our new house for about 2pm. Unloading was done by 430 including beds, wardrobes and large outdoor furniture reassembled which was a god send. All boxes put in the correct rooms and even a final check at 5pm to see if anything needed moving to another spot. I cannot recommend these guys enough, great set of lads and top tier proffesionals in every aspect. We suggested a friend use them a few weeks later and she was equally as impressed. A huge thanks to you all! 👏Posted on Google Sarah Khaja-SharifTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Keiran and team were amazing, couldn’t have asked for a better removals company to do our house move. They made everything look super easy, I don’t know how we would have moved house without them! 100% would recommend.
